World War One 1914-1918
World War 1 was the global battle centered mainly in Europe from July of 1914 to November in 1918. Nine million people who took part in the combat died while seven civilians lost their lives as a result. In history, it was one of the most lethal conflicts in humanity. It had resultant changes to politics, revolutions, and understanding of the nations that were involved. All the great powers and nations of the world were assembled in two alliances of opposition. The allies consisted of the UK, Russian Empire and France as well as the central powers of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The alliances expanded with inclusion of more nations like Italy, the United States, and Japan. Archduke Franz Ferdinand from Austria was assassinated in June 1914 and this triggered conflict on a global scale as a diplomatic crisis was set off amidst international alliances.
Serbia was invaded by Austro-Hungarian declaration and this triggered several world powers into the conflict, as support for the different camps was necessary. For example, Russia supported Serbia. Germany was involved in the invasion of Luxembourg and Belgium as Britain reacted by declaring war on Germany. With Japan’s entry into the war by joining the allied forces, central powers were unified with the Ottoman Empire’s inclusion. Women took up men’s jobs as the war spread to the seas. Casualties reached the million mark in less than ten months. During the year 1917, the army from Germany decided to retreat to the Hindenburg line as the US joined in assisting the allies. Counter offensives at Amiens and Marne signified a change. Armistice was signed as a mark to end the war in November 1918 while the treaty of Versailles was signed on July 1919.
