Why Crevecoeur Would Remain Loyal To the Crown during the Revolutionary War

During the revolutionary war, Crevecoeur, a farmer in America whose origin was France remained loyal to the British Crown, which made him a Tory. As a result, he lost his farm and fortune. According to one of his letters, What is an American?, he believed that America was made up of people from all races who came together and changed to fit into the new land. He described being American as being a free individual, one who enjoyed the fruit of his labor and got rewards for his toils. According to him, Europeans lived in a different culture where they had to pay tribute to the princess by toiling and bleeding for her.

Despite his devotion to America, he did not support the revolution. Based on what he wrote in this letter, the main reason he did not support the American Revolution was his belief in the country belonging to all people and not one race. The American Revolution did not support this idea concerning being comprised of all races that come together to make up one. In addition, he also mentioned in the text that one always remains loyal to the land he tills, so he thought Europeans would do the same. Although this should have made him a rival to the British crown, considering he was from France, he chose to remain loyal to the crown because it would allow more Europeans to come to the new land. Britain was the best option for him because it would support his beliefs of America being made up of many races from different parts of the world.

In addition, he remained loyal to the crown at the time because he believed that European immigrants would not be expected to remain loyal to their former societies that condemned them. Majority served involuntary idleness, mental dependence, worthless labor and poverty. With their labor and dignity secured, the new citizens would love America and never think of going back to their former societies.
