Waiting on the World to Change

Question 1

In ‘Waiting on the World to Change,’ John Mayer expresses skepticism about the current state of the world with respect to the empowering of the young generation to enable them to lead and make positive contributions to their world. It is increasingly difficult for the youth to get into positions of leadership and even to get high-level jobs where they can influence policy as many members of the old generation still cling to these positions. The systems are also rigged to ensure that even when they manage to get the chance to start from the bottom and work their way up the ranks, the process is long and challenging. For this reason, there are high job turnover rates among Generation Y as they struggle to find places where their efforts and contributions are recognized and rewarded. The old generation always thinks that their ideas are the best and overlook those of the youth, though some have excellent and researched methods of handling issues that could indeed result in better outcomes.

Question 2

The song has relevance to all generations since everyone is affected by the status quo that the few in power have created. The elite has created a class that allows them and their kin to be the first beneficiaries of the best in education and career development leaving the rest of the population to compete for the few left over spots. The elite use the media to make the society believe that the systems are fair and in cases where they miss out it would be because the process was very competitive. The only thing the commoner can do is to wait for the systems to change and allow equitable distribution of resources and fair recognition of achievements so that they can make their contributions to the betterment of their world.

With the strict censorship laws in place, they are only left with music to pass on their message through imagery and other literary devices.
