Trace the causes of WWII
Hitler was determined to expand Germany as a way of providing more space for Germans to live. He annexed Austria before moving to Czechoslovakia and Poland. Countries had made treaties to protect each other in case of an attack. Great Britain and France defended Poland once Hitler occupied it and they declared war on Germany. More countries joined the war to honor the treaties they had made with each other.
Explain America’s foreign policy that developed after WWI and that was in place at the beginning of WWII. How did this policy change as the war progressed?
The US had developed a policy of neutrality during the First World War. It had also developed a policy of isolationism whereby it resisted efforts to join other countries. However, this changed during the war. It supported the allied forces and it provided weapons to Great Britain during the war. It provided more support by providing the navy, which ensured that all the shipment reached Great Britain safely. America continued to participate in the war and ensured that it ended in the pacific as well.
How was WWII brought to an end in both Europe and the Pacific?
Many countries joined the allied forces and they led an attack against Germany from all sides. Germany had some of the best equipment but they had gradually used up all the resources in the war. They were overwhelmed as many of the countries were against them. The successful attacks ended the war in Europe. Japan had largely influenced America’s decision to join the war when it attacked the Pearl Harbor. America’s decision to use nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war in the pacific. Many people died because of this attack.
Do you think the atomic bomb was the only way to end the war? Was it worth it?
I do not think that the atomic bomb was the only way to end the attack. Japan had participated in war for a long time and it did not have enough resources to continue fighting. They had reached a point where they were about to give up because they could no longer afford to fight. America made the decision to drop the atomic bomb and it did not involve other countries. Had it done so, the countries could have found a way of ending the war without incurring so much loss. It was not worth it to drop the bombs. Many of the people who died were civilians who did not know anything about the war. The survivors had to live with enduring scars and health defects because of the effects of the bomb. In addition, relations between Japan and America were strained for a long time.
