Introduction

Time, Tools and Talismans by Susan Wyche-Smith is an indicative study on the learning methods used by students when dealing with rituals associated with in supporting or hindering their writing processes. Writing encompasses means and methods of increasing concentration, obtaining the optimal efficiency in delivery of the thoughtful processes, while maximizing on a given setting and environment. Certain behaviors affect the composing processes while others serve to increase the writing capabilities depending on the nature of the writer and extent of deadlines garnered in the time. Both internal and external factors all contribute to the success and failures of the writing process by the students. Time, Tools and Talismans by Susan Wyche-Smith has enabled a mental analysis at means of reducing procrastination and increase productivity in working conditions for purposes of writing.    

Discussion

The author looks at the normal, strange, bizarre, and extreme measures undertaken by different students as regards their writing criteria and environment. She analyses the effect of each circumstance and student accord of the environment towards the cognitive thinking process and delivery of logical ideas into writing. The writer then uses interviews and questionnaires to determine real life experiences of various students and their behaviors in limiting or promoting the thinking process and subsequent writing availabilities. With the help of psychological study and information guides, the author presents respective behaviors and translated results on writing. She concludes on selected mechanisms aimed at increasing productivity while reducing procrastination as a boost towards better writing and translation of ideas.

            Based on personal habits, behaviors and rituals, I prefer a serene environment in order to ascertain clear thought and logical flow ideas. I work best under pressure when the deadlines are due as compared to eventful planning prior to undertaking the writing exercise. Earlier in high school, the follow through of thoughts was established with micro recording at intervals of any recognized thought. It enabled my ideas to be preserve even though I could not entirely retrace the logic behind them all. Additionally, reading through as opposed to note taking is my ideal method of information gathering before recollection and reproduction through writing.

            In order for counter-productivity to be effected in my methods as well as reduction of procrastination, I have to base by habits and form rituals with the guidelines from the author’s words. She states, “Because no two writers are alike, no formula for effective rituals exists. Even the same writer may use different rituals for different projects or for different stages of a project (Baugh and Cable, 59).” Therefore, I have to draw a typical schedule of the writing needed, timeline an expectation. I have to consider the amount of time that mark my maximum concentration and maximize without interruptions, incorporate reading and make us of breaks to refresh my idea flows and logical thinking to increase productivity.  

Conclusion

Time, Tools and Talismans by Susan Wyche-Smith has enabled a mental analysis at means of reducing procrastination and increase productivity in working conditions for purposes of writing. With the detailed analysis of differential use of rituals by different students, one can decipher effective mechanisms of maximizing concentration through reducing hindrances towards logical thinking and flow of ideas as studied by the author and basing on personal experiences. Additionally, it can help stimulate repeated means of achieving maximum success in writing as enabled with the in-depth psychological study and enabled analysis of behavioral patterns and results.
