Theogony by Hesiod
The Theogony by Hesiod is a poem that illustrates the descent and beginning of the Greek deities. For Hesiod, the origin of creation started from Chaos. Also described as the yawning void, the poem considers this aspect as the foundation of existence for all animate things. Accordingly, Chaos resulted in the conception of Earth, referred to as Gaia. Furthermore, the void also conceived Tartarus, (the space beneath the earth), Erebus, (the darkness in the space beneath the Earth), Nyx, (the Night), and Eros, which constituted the sexual need to procreate. Consequently, Erebus and Nyx procreated and have birth to Aether (the exterior atmosphere breathed by the gods) and Hemera (the Day). Gaia also gave birth to Uranus (the sky), Pontus (the Sea) and the Qurea (the Mountains). Accordingly, Uranus and Gaia reproduced the twelve titans. They include Phoebe, Oceanus, Hyperion, Iapetos, Themis, Cronus, Crius, Theia, Rhea, Mnemosyne, Coeus and Tethys. Furthermore, the relation between Uranus and Gaia led to the birth of three Cyclops (Steropes, Brontes and Arges) and three Hecatonchires (Gyges, Kottos and Briareos).
Accordingly, the castrations of Uranus by Cronus led to the birth of Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) after Uranus cast his genitals into the sea. Furthermore, Uranus’ blood led to the conception of the Furies, Giants and Meliai. In the interim, Nyx gave birth to Moros (Doom), Ker and the Keres (Destinies), Momos (Fault), Oneiroi (Dreams), Thanatos (Demise), Nemesis (Vengeance), Oizys (Destitution), Eris (Dissension), Hesperides (Daughters of Night), Apate (Deception), Hypnos (Sleep), Geras ( Old Age), Moirai (Fates) and Philotes (Love). Moreover, Eris conceived Ponos (Pain), Lethe (Oblivion), the Phonoi (Murders), Hysmine (Battles), Ate (Ruin), the Algea (Diseases), Logoi (Stories), Amphilogia (Disputes), Makhai (Fight), Dysnomia (Anarchy), Pseudologos (Lies), Limos (Famine), the Neikea (Quarrels) and Androkatsia (Manslaughters). Furthermore, the relations between Gaia and Pontus led to the birth of the Sea Deities such as Nereus. Accordingly, Cronus and Rhea bore Hestia, Hades, Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, and Demeter.
