The Things They Carried Essay

This collection of poems supports the aspects in life that I possess and utilize on a daily basis. They tend to be a necessity in my life. Although these features are intangible, their outcomes are clearly visible. One such aspect is dreams. Every human being has visions regarding the future. Every day, I imagine a brighter future where all my needs and wants will be attainable. As the poet of Dreams asserts, thoughts make our lives interesting and worthy. This is evident when he states, “Hold fast to dreams for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow”.

Additionally, an aspect I carry close to me on a daily basis is the sense of admiration. There are things in the surrounding, tangible and intangible, which satisfy my emotional and visual appeals. Such items include waterfalls and forests. For example, the serene ambiance in the wooded area calms my mind and soul. This makes me have a high regard for the aspects of nature. I attribute this admiration to my personality, upbringing and culture. Being an introvert, I prefer viewing landscapes that provide an appropriate platform for personal reflection. Moreover, growing up near a forest has made me appreciative of the environment.

Affection is also a quality I hold dear. This love can be towards various individuals such as family members, friends, or colleagues. The fact that I can share my warmth with several individuals at the same time is amazing and satisfying. However, the exhibited form of love is different depending on the recipient. For example, I show affection to my parents and friends in a different manner. This is because of the dissimilarity in my level of fondness with these persons. This interaction strengthens my relationships with my relatives and friends and as such making my life increasingly exciting and precious.

Moreover, I carry many burdens in my daily life. These problems are with regard to my relations, education and future. For example, I always worry about the grades that I will attain upon completion of my studies. This makes me work extra hard in order to accomplish my goals in the learning process. In addition, conflicts with the people I care about increase my trouble since I have high regard for harmony. Therefore, I avoid actions that may jeopardize my connection with the people around me.

My conscience is also an attribute that accompanies me every day. Despite my efforts to ignore this part of my soul in certain occasions, I end up feeling guilty after doing something wrong. I relate this to my upbringing as well as societal norms. Having followed Christian values in my early years, I consider certain actions as immoral and unacceptable. Moreover, the standards dictated by the society guide me in determining the right and wrong things in life. This aspect has molded my personality.

Honesty is also an integral part of my life and exhibits itself in various occasions. Owing to my religious upbringing and character, I do not feel comfortable giving false information to other people. I not only find it unacceptable but also unethical. In my opinion, it is more appropriate not to give any details than conveying false information. I consider dishonesty as one of the causes of most evil deeds in the world. Sincerity has not only strengthened my relationships with various individuals but has also reduced my burdens significantly.
