The Second Great Awakening

One of the defining revival movements that took place at the turn of the 19^th century comprised the Second Great Awakening. Prior to its inclusion of members from different religious denominations, the social movement was particularly inclined to American Protestantism in 1790. Accordingly, the Second Great Awakening was based on the assertion concerning the eagerly awaited Second arrival of Jesus Christ. In this respect, members of the movement focused on expunging the ills that were present in the society at the time. In an attempt to do so, the Second Great Awakening collided significantly with women’s suffrage, concerns of slavery, and the devastation of sports bars. The social movement exhibited more women converts than men. Despite this, it was particularly difficult for women to undergo the indoctrination process. In addition, women were not allowed to hold principal ministerial positions. Because of this, women began developing reform and missionary societies that allowed them to gain external influence (n. a., 2014). Concerns about slavery were prevalent due to the discrimination that slaves, as well as freed men and women, went through because of their African origins. Such conditions led to the withdrawal of African-Americans from Baptist and Methodist congregations thereby leading to the creation of congregations that predominantly served the respective populations (n. a., 2014). The opportunity to organize allowed slaves and freedmen to demand freedom, as evidenced by the occurrence of the Nat Turner Uprising in 1831. The wave of revivalism that swept across the movement led to the destruction of sports bars. The devastation of such structures took place to eradicate products or activities that were deemed as sin in preparation for the consequent arrival of Jesus Christ (Bledsoe, 2014). As a result, rallies were held against structures that permitted the consumption of alcohol (Bledsoe, 2014).
