The Future of English

The future of the English language is more complicated and unpredictable than it used to appear several decades ago. English is the most dominant language in the world. The language has the biggest literary resource in terms of writing and films. One out of five people in the globe speaks English, thus stabilizing its future. English will continue to exist in the future, but there lies uncertainty on whether it will still be the dominant language in the world. The changing patterns in trade and work practices affect the growth and use of English. For example, countries trading with China more than English countries are more likely to prioritize learning Chinese to English. The growth rate of English is stable, but deeper assessment highlights that continuing growth is uncertain. As the figure of English learners nurture, subsequent language speakers grow fonder of English while English speakers grow fond of subsequent languages.

English language has been closely linked with scientific and technological advancements in the recent past. This relationship cannot be predicted to carry on as current technological advancements occur irrespective of language. An example of this phenomenon is Dubai City. The city is endowed with technological advancements, but the natives are Arabic speakers. The growing conviction amongst scientists and linguists is that the future occupants of the world will be bilingual. Large parts of the globe will have people fluent in more than one language. The change to monolingual to bilingual will be influenced mostly by trade patterns and multicultural interactions. The process is referred to as economic rationalism where the government directs individuals and institutions to familiarize themselves with languages from countries that have trade priority. As depicted, the growth of English is stable and positive, but it does not offer assurance of the language’s dominance.
