System Engineering and Customer/supplier Relationships

The role of a system integrator is to act as the consumer’s link to his need bearing in mind his best interests. The systems engineer is to serve as a planner, to uncover the need of the customer, the resources needed to fulfill the task and the providers of the same to come up with the best solution to the need of the end user. The SE assembles the technical team and project manager to ensure the success of a project by eliminating risks, minimizing costs, and addressing cause/effect relationships.

Awareness of the “Total” System

The ‘Total’ system refers to the use of pre-set strategies by minimizing risks, and fitting plans to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and enable project managers to complete building processes. The methodology is quantitatively structured to work in decision-making environments. It employs the use of physics grounded models, stakeholder analysis, multi-objective optimization and real options.

Lessons Learned Collection

Owing to its systematic distinguishing of technical needs from the resource requirement, system engineering would have been useful in the selection of technical options. Unlike the Defense department’s decision to independently form the components and merge them into one, the systems engineering method puts to consideration that a system, during assembly, changes in terms of its complexity and therefore requires an understanding of the behavior of the finished system. An important factor in systems engineering is program risk mitigation. The failure of programs such as the FCS and the SBINet is that the department was unable to determine the effect of the large complementary and rival parts of the technical solutions. The individual problems that eventually influenced the whole system were therefore discovered too late. The only way for the defense department to redeem itself is to translate the quantitative needs into systematic designs on engineering systems that can reflect operational demands. This is the fundamental element of systems engineering.
