Sustainable Living

The constituents will be involved in different activities including farming. They will plant crops, which they will use, as food sources. The most prominent crops will be native plants because they require minimal care. In addition, they grow easily and they do not need additional resources. There will be minimal use of fertilizer. Instead, mulch and manure will be used and this will help in preventing dependence on chemicals. They will also use natural forms of energy and fuel for cooking and lighting. One of the main sources of energy will be solar power. I will determine the people that are gifted both mechanically and technologically. I shall also encourage them to find ways of harnessing and storing energy from the sun. The community will also depend on wind power. It is possible to have additional sources of energy by using waste from plants, animals, and wood. This makes biogas, which can be used for heat and cooking. The bio energy shall supplement the solar energy especially during the winter months. Wind turbines shall be used in some places, depending on the topography of the land.

The community shall identify a common source of water such as a river. However, I shall also engage young and energetic people to build a well, which will be useful in case the river does not have enough water. I will not control the population but I will instead urge people to be reasonable when planning their families. There is a need to have more people working on the farms. By increasing the farm output, we shall have adequate food. There is a need to ensure that the society keeps growing and this can only happen if people are productive. The main modes of transport will be walking or cycling. There will be no need for any form of motor vehicles. This will act to prevent and reduce pollution and the carbon footprint. It will also work to ensure that the community is independent.

Construction of houses shall depend on the materials that are in abundance or those that are readily available. I plan to use most of the land for agriculture. Each family will be expected to produce its own food and contribute a portion of it to common stores. The design for the houses will take minimal space and this will allow for more farming space. Most of the houses will be constructed using wood, stone, and earth. An alternative to stone would be rock and adobe. The type of wood to consider will be bamboo because it grows rapidly, and it is durable. It is possible to construct a sizeable house using bamboo alone. Another possibility is rammed earth, which shall be used in place of materials such as concrete. Using rammed earth will ensure sustainable use of energy. The houses shall be designed in such a way that there will be minimal need for additional energy. They shall have large windows and ventilation spaces in every room to ensure easy entry of fresh air from the outside. This will also ensure dependence of natural lighting. Another important feature is that they will be on raised stone ground. This is meant to protect the wooden structure from termites and other pests that may feast on the wood. There shall be numerous trees planted on the compound and there shall be a designated area for planting trees as well. This will ensure that there is sufficient wind.
