Summary of “The Elephant is Ova Dere”

The chapter details about a life changing moment in the author’s life and the important lessons that he derived from the experience. In the South Africa tour he embarked on, he and his wife in the company of other billionaires who were there for an excursion to discuss matters relating to faith and finances experienced a new life beyond that in Dallas as the terrain was covered in wildlife and nature which was overwhelmingly amazing for this group (Cowen n.p). According to T.D Jakes, after a long search of elephants, on discovering one courtesy of the Zulu tour guide, the primary lesson that occurred in the form of an epiphany was that instinct outweighs intellect in many important life challenges and experiences (Jakes 37). The intelligent tour guide was able to opinionate facts concerning the area, however, due to strong tracking instincts demonstrated by the Zulu, he was eventually able to point out that location of the elephant.

Another lesson derived from this seemingly unexpected encounter is the need to surround one’s self not only with intellectual who are all knowing and prepared for the future but also include those that are specially gifted as intellect is not solely able to fulfill an individual’s life of provide directive (“Bishop T.D. Jakes Encourages ‘Instinct'” n.p). In addition, the author further elaborates the intrinsic connection between intellect and instinct that merge to explain and find life’s purpose. Instinct as elaborated is the fundamental aspect that equips an individual with the ability to match actions with intentions (Jakes 36). He opines that it is highly crucial that people apply themselves to become visionaries that allow them to meet their targeted objectives through becoming well equipped and well informed. However, without the application of intrinsic instinct, it is unlikely for one to achieve their expectations even with the provision of equipment, quality education, and information.

The importance of instinct, as explained by the author, can be likened to the sales expertise depicted by a sales person. According to Jakes, a salesman might apply intellect in understanding and explaining the product to the client, however, with the use of instinct, they are not only able to ensure the customer fully comprehends the advantages of their purchase but also capable of winning them over through reading them (Jakes 40). Another exemplary scenario is that of a police officer, intellect allows thorough investigation to be conducted but it is also important to consider instincts in locating and arresting the perpetrator. Therefore, based on these scenarios, it is evident that instincts allow an individual to accomplish their goals through collaborating with their intellectual knowledgeability.

The art of managing a moment and positioning one’s self in a manner that’s allows for adaptation, resourcefulness, creativity and strategic progression is reliant on the law of instincts (Cowen n.p). This statement is validated by modern day events that occur predictably such as lottery wins, elevation of artists from engineers, presidential elections wins, and successful careers established by comedians. From these events, one is able to appreciate the need of living a life that allows instinct driven decisions in order to achieve greater goals and overcome barriers (Jakes 42). Through applying instinct, one is able to identify moments that require slowing down and reevaluation and those that demand full commitment, drive and dedication which is not only important for self realization but for facilitating personal growth and achievement.
