Special Education

Special education to me has always been a vision and an aim to achieve in my life. The field entails not only my career objective but also my passion. My interests normally weigh on social activities mostly centering on the less fortunate or individuals with special needs. My professional goal is that I will be managing or owning a special need facility by the average age that man is considered to be in his/her peak. Special education to me is a means of attaining two goals by one stroke. A means to improving the society and at the same time developing a career. As a child, I would always be moved by stories of special needs individuals or special situations; at one time, I recall being moved to tears while watching a documentary on “Pearl Harbor”. How the navy officers suffered from deafness and blindness caused by the blasts and debris. It was also inspiring on how the nurses worked tirelessly to save and improve lives. Officers wounded in battle or any other person suffering from special cases require specially trained people to assist them recover and better there lives. I want to become such an individual. Scenes from hospitals and special recover facilities have input some passion in me towards these cases which I hope to make a difference.

I derive my encouragement to continue in educational psychology from my own set of principles and passion. I believe that one has to be self-driven to progress in life, but at the same time not undermining the need for social support and encouragement. Social support is vital for an individual with special needs; realistically it is essential for every person. Quick ability in learning, information retention and patience for results are my outstanding strengths. My weaknesses fall under over expectations and poor interpretations of life scenarios. These are personal challenges in character that am struggling to eradicate. My main interest in the subject of special needs is in sensory needs, needs that occur when one or more of the senses are absent. Senses are a major functionality of the human body and are basis of all human activities. Where absent, I will attempt to recover or adopt the affected person to the new limitations of his senses. Scenarios leading to special needs are different and it is important to differentiate between scenarios where one can recover and where one cannot in order not to bear false hopes on the patient.

As stated in the first paragraph, seven or eight years from I foresee myself in a position of managerial value or of owning, a special needs facility. The outcome whatever it may be will be in supporting individuals who require such kind of assistance. I possess no solid skill or attitude but I trust my talent in data retention, positive character and passion to venture into special needs is enough reason to verify my want to study special needs. I have been involved in several voluntary visits to hospitals to assist people with special needs. Though small, I possess first hand understanding on the toll of the subject on an individual, affected or not. Persons with special needs require attention and I believe venturing into the field will bring me intellectual, moral and financial satisfaction later on in life. Admission to your prestigious institution will equip me with the necessary teaching tools and methods necessary for my advancement. It will also expose me further in the environment of special people, which I believe will adjust my negatives to positives.
