Sociology Discussion Question

Desegregation in public schools refers to the termination of separation of students from different races. Segregation even in schools is a violation of the clause of Equal Protection in the fourteenth amendment. Racial desegregation is guaranteed to diminish the inferiority mind-set experienced by students in segregated environments and is a key factor in promoting socialization in school going children.

Desegregation in public school was advocated for by the implementation of the busing policy. This was supposed to ensure that black students were transported to white schools and white students to black schools. This was meant to provide equal opportunities for the two-raced students in public schools. It was important in ensuring that the black students accessed the superior facilities that their white counterparts enjoyed (“School Desegregation and Equal Educational Opportunity” 1).

Local control of public schools is aimed at giving the specific parents or board members the power to control what goes on in the schools as opposed to having a general board controlling many schools in a given state. These local boards fight for the right to run the activities of the schools like allocating where specific funds are directed. The local control boards maintain that they are the only ones capable of making the school system a success as opposed to what the state directives can do.

The controversy between desegregation and local control is a debate that is likely to go on for a long time. I am however, of the opinion that desegregation in public schools is of more importance than local control because this will guarantee an equal opportunities for every student regardless of the race or social status. More efforts should be put to it. Local control over schools can come later when the situation of discrimination has been resolved and segregation achieve.
