Smallville Police Arrest Women with Mexican Cartel Links
An unlikely turn of events saw Smallville police arrest three women suspected of having ties with a powerful Mexican drug cartel on charges ranging from felony theft to assault on a police officer.
Police believe that the three women, identified as Lisa Belkin (26), Gertrudis Cano (30) and Jenifer Wade (28) of Smallville, San Diego and Los Angeles respectively, work with the Sinaloa Cartel, a powerful criminal organization that is involved in drug trafficking.
Smallville Police Officer Henry Jenkins says that the women were found in possession of various stolen items. This led the police to suspect that the women were part of a burglary ring that had been operating in Smallville for six months.
The events leading to the arrest of the three women begun yesterday when they purportedly stole various clothing items from the Target store on 1313, Nile Boulevard. When confronted, the women allegedly assaulted the store clerks and fled the scene.
Smallville Police Officer Henry Jenkins says that the police were able to track down the suspects to Ms. Belkin’s address where a second confrontation ensued.
Four officers arrived at the location and were welcomed into the house by Ms. Belkin. Upon entering the house, the officers were attacked by two women wielding baseball bats. A brief melee ensued before officers secured the scene.
After the confrontation, police searched the house and discovered various items. These included clothing articles still with their tags, electronics and household goods. Police also found three kilos of cocaine and ten kilos of what later turned out to be methamphetamine.
Additional searches revealed documents and records from the house. Smallville police say that the documents imply links between the suspects and the Sinaloa Cartel. If police confirm the links, then the arrests will be the first in Smallville involving the cartel.
Following the arrests, the Smallville Police Department has booked the suspects on burglary, felony theft, assault on a police officer, suspicion of assault and the possession of drugs with the intent to distribute. Further investigations could lead to more arrests.
“With these arrests,” says Officer Jenkins. “We are confident we have taken down a burglary and drug distribution ring.”
