Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the Abu Dhabi ruler from 1966 to 2004 and the first United Arab Emirates president from 1971 to 2004. The youngest son of the Abu Dhabi ruler, Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan is commonly recognized as the father of the UAE nation. During his reign, he worked tirelessly in several sectors in improving the living standards of the nation and thereby uniting the seven emirates. On December 2, 1971, the seven emirates, Dubai, Fujairah, Umm al-Quwain, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah Abu Dhabi and Sharjah formed a federation called the United Arab Emirates with Zayed as the president. During his rule, he made several developments that help in uniting the country into one state.

One of the most remarkable moves that President Zayed ever did was when he used the country’s large oil revenues in constructing institutions. He directed the oil revenue into construction of schools, hospitals, and universities in the country. Notably, not all these institutions were congested within a particular emirate since they were evenly institutionalized in all emirates. His wise decision not only allowed citizens to access these services easily but also in uniting the emirates into one. People from diverse localities had to mingle in order to enjoy these privileges, which restored peace and unity among the people. With a particular interest in the health care sector, President Zayed decreed that the government would undertake all costs involving foreign health care to families that could not afford it, thereby, creating some sense of equity among all states in the region.
