Scholarship Essay

I am a high school senior from a small border town in Syria, planning to graduate in 2015. As a young person, I understand that there is an intrinsic link between my future and education. My parents understood this as well, so they ensured that I received a good education in Syria. They did this by taking me to an international school using the American system of education, where overcrowding and poor facilities were not key concerns. The ongoing conflict in my country magnifies the importance of a good education by making the youth of Syria the country’s greatest asset. After the conflict ends, the youth will play a critical role in helping the country recover. Syria’s youth will also have to work together to ensure that the country never witnesses such conflicts again. Accordingly, I feel that it is extremely important for young people such as me to acquire the best education that they can, so that they can make positive contributions in the recovery process.

In the next five years, I see myself pursuing a master’s degree in the field of development studies, having already acquired a bachelor’s degree in business administration with concentrations in banking and information technology. I plan to pursue my masters in development studies so that I can help my country grow from a conflict-ridden third-world country, to a middle class nation that has a strong economy and is close to achieving self-sustenance. In the next ten years, I plan to have already returned to Syria, where I will be working to make my country a better place. By this time, I will have already attained a PhD in development studies, allowing me to understand how a nation such as Syria can achieve equal and sustainable growth.

In the next twenty years, I intend to be one of the people leading Syria towards a bright and prosperous future. Over the last three years, I have spent my summers attending a leadership-training program called the Youth Leadership for Life Program in Ireland. This program has helped me hone my leadership and prepare me for a future role as a leader in my nation. I plan to use my skills as a leader along with my education to achieve these dreams and help my country overcome its torrid past.
