Reflective Overview

Rhetoric is learning of speaking and writing effectively. It involves communication by persuading, inspiring, entertain, or inform someone or an audience. Rhetoric can change or support someone or an audience’s beliefs, values, habits or actions. In persuasion, some of the ways one can use words is by repetition, but not in the same way as using different words to express the same point. Good repetition does not involve using same words repeatedly, which is the wrong repetition. Consistency is required in persuading a person because it shows the person your assertiveness and may end up convincing them. One should look for guidance from someone close and seek social proof, which helps in the persuasion. A person should make the best use of metaphors, similes, and analogies. By using words in these ways, one will have the ability to influence people’s minds and change their perspective about something. Improved mindsets will result in positive changes in the society.

As seen, rhetoric is used in persuasion in people’s beliefs, action, values, or habits. Therefore, rhetoric can also change a person’s attitude towards something. Rhetoric finds available means of communication. For instance, in the song ‘good morning’, Kanye changes the attitude of a person living a poor life. The song tells them that he or she can go to school, and graduate and everything they dreamed of shall become true as seen in the line “…everything will become legendary, everything we dreamed of …” Rhetoric, like any other art, is used in communication and the enhancement of the truth, understanding between two people, and its beauty. The most powerful forms of rhetoric have a hidden meaning in their strategies and intentions. The rhetoric study does not enable a person’s deeper comprehension of strategic communication alone, but it also guides the practical use of rhetoric.

In my rhetoric analysis, I wrote on Kanye west’s song, ‘good morning.’ The song talks about a boy who has been failing in all his examinations, getting straight Ds. He failed in every class because everyone else had cheated in the exams. On another day, his life changes, the person’s dreams come true. He moves from the streets to a better place. He looks back and reflects on seeing how far he has come, from living in the streets to a better life. Those who are jealous say that he has changed. The person does not care but continues to work hard and be more successful. The song gives hope to those who are still struggling in their lives to make a living. It gives them motivation that every day is a new day.

Evidently, basic rhetoric is important for students, especially those in colleges. Rhetorical knowledge gives a person the ability use words in a unique manner that will portray their intellect. Rhetoric is an art of persuasion, especially in the academic life of a student. Rhetorical devices used by the lecturer not only help the students in engaging in class but also make the subject content fresh in one’s memory. The new graduates will be able to communicate well with people and after graduation, they will be confident to look for jobs and live in harmony with their colleagues. Use of rhetoric is necessary for a person’s life mainly because of the art of persuasion, for the benefit of people and the society.
