Reflections on Special Education Instruction

1.         One of the main misconceptions that I had at the beginning of the term involved the supposed difficulty involved in teaching children with special needs. Through influences specifically from the media as well as conventional instruction systems, most of us have been forwarded to the allusion that educating persons with impairments is considerably difficult. However, this is contrary to the information I gained from the course throughout the term. Apparently, with considerable research, students with special needs can learn as easily as other students.

2.         The main learning that will pose an effect on me concerning this course involves the lessons on educating learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the years, the management of children with mental retardation has gained considerable influence from social-based views, which mostly tend to be biased and subjective. In this case, learning about the existence of such abilities has provided a platform for me to address old perspectives that limit parents further from implementing an inclusive education structure for their children who possess such manageable intellectual incapacities.

3.         In order to maintain form in keeping current within my field concerning disability, my participation in professional development will involve working for organizations that focus specifically on catering to learners with special needs. Organizations such as schools for the disabled may assist me in learning about certain impairments as well as the measures that are being applied for purposes of establishing a successful education framework. If employment is difficult, I can also choose to engage in internships within such organizations.

4.         Personally, I have come to understand that persons with disabilities are not entirely different from other occupants of the society. Nevertheless, children with intellectual and physical impairments have been overlooked for a long time in terms of education and development due to the biased views of societal institutions. However, with research dedicated to such courses, disabled students now have a formidable platform that will assist them in pursuing their goals. In the end, disability does not necessarily stand for inability.
