Institutionalization of rating systems on theatrical works, especially theatrical works containing adult language, violence, or sexual situations would be of hindrance to the growth of theatre. Notably, theatre content lacks any form of ratings since it conceptualization century’s back. There is likelihood that a greater percentage of theatre fans prefer this form of performance due to the nature of the plays. Theatres do not have to conform to contradictory requirements imposed by boards and lawsuits, which makes it even more appealing.

However, if ratings were to be introduced, then the populace whose preference is more inclined to theatre would decrease considerably. Furthermore, ratings are one of the major factors that distinguish film from theatre. Thereby, introducing limits would affect the quality of theatrical works. A reduction in the theatrical viewers translates to reduced monetary refunds. If the trend progresses, then the theatrical production houses would lack enough funds to produce more works. In addition, reduction in viewers would translate in reduced production since increasing it would be utterly wasteful. If rating systems were to be introduced in theatre, then some theatres such as the Firehouse Theatre Project in Canada would suffer as it features adult oriented theatrical works.

From a personal perspective, a rating system is part of a marketing strategy to increase sales. Currently, the theatre and film industry is filled with content full of profanity, criminal behavior or drug abuse, which makes most people especially parents prefer theatres that have been rated. The need to identify the content and suitability of theatrical works is increasing rapidly. Thereby, integrating a rating system within a specific work lessens the hassle of having to identify the suitability of a certain work without previewing. Marketers have noticed the significance of including the ratings, which makes its integration more of a marketing strategy rather than an artist’s censorship.
