Question One A: Role of women

According to the society, it is only through relationships and marriages that women will be able to fulfill their role of creating a family. However, the degree of their socialization with their male counterparts is solely dependent on their upbringing and determination to overcome failed relationships.

In A rose for Emily, the author narrates how the people judge women who prefer to live in solitude. Emily’s father had set specific standards for her that had to be met by any man who was interested in marrying her. Despite the fact that she was getting older, she was still determined to meet the man who met these standards even after her father’s death. Conversely, Faulkner points out that the society expected women to build successful homes with their husbands.

Emily’s determination to find the perfect person influenced her preference to leave in solitude. Everybody refrained from socializing with her because people were shocked by her peculiar behavior. In contrast, the character in Lady Lazarus was more outgoing. By dying, the narrator symbolized unsuccessful relationships. According to her, women can establish and nurture relationships despite their past failures.

The two stories depict two different women. Since the society expects women to socialize with men, and the fact that this is the only way they will be able to fulfill their role of becoming a mother, it is important for them not to refrain from courtship.

Question Two B: Death

Despite the skills, strength or financial wealth acquired by an individual, everybody is afraid of his or her death. However, people decide to face their deaths differently. In addition, the manner in which people lived their lives will also determine if they will be considered heroes or not. Furthermore, there are those who wish for their triumph at the cost of other people’s lives.

From The Things They Carry, it is possible to identify how people face their deaths differently. There are people who will try to overcome the anxiety by using tranquilizers and abusing drugs such as marijuana. Conversely, there are those who will think about their friends and relatives. Furthermore, the author also points out that people would either prefer to die swiftly or slowly. According to those who prefer to die swiftly, they argue that the process is less painful, and has minimal anxiety. Conversely, those who prefer a slower death hope that their lives might extend or receive pardon if they begged for their lives to be spared.

The story, The Things They Carry, and the poem, To the Athlete Dying Young, have pointed out that dead people will be treated as heroes and icons based on the deeds they carried out while they were alive. Examples have been given of great solders and athletes who will be remembered for their courage, strengths and prowess. Finally, The War Prayer narrates that there are people who will wish for their triumph in battle and death of their opponents. This might take the form of prayers, which are always aimed at motivating warriors that their gods will be with them in battle.

People decide to face their deaths differently. An individual might opt for a swift or slow death. In addition, they may adopt different measures to overcome the anxiety surrounding death. Furthermore, public admiration, even after death, might encourage people to perform deeds that would enable them to be considered as heroes. Finally, there are people who would wish for the death of their opponents, especially during war.
