Question 1: Self and School – based on the readings in q1 file.

Both Tobin’s article, ‘Japanese Preschools and the Pedagogy of Selfhood’ and Hess & Azuma’s, ‘Cultural Support for Schooling, Contrasts between Japan and the United States,’ discuss aspects of children’s/students’ culturally shaped dispositions and how these traits (or ‘self’) play a critical role in supporting the educational environments and curriculums, in which they function. (1) Describe and explain how culture help shape such dispositions and (2) how they (dispositions) are vital to support the education environments and curriculum in which they function.

Question 2: Self in Culture – based on the readings in q2 file.

Psychological anthropologists during the last two decades of the Twentieth Century turned their attention to the subjective, internal contents – i.e., psychological experience, processes and functions — of an individual under the umbrella concept of “self” (LeVie, Self in Culture, pp. 241-244). Describe and explain the contents of ‘self’ as defined here in terms of how they (‘contents’) are mediated by culture.

Note: Culture here refers to “collective (shared) organization of normative ideas,” (LeVine) wherein such ideas may be embedded in language, philosophical traditions (e.g. Confucianism, Greek philosophy), house design, emotional experiences and expressions, or sense of morality, etc. (this is not an exhaustive list). Use all reading materials.
For both questions, make sure to demonstrate that you have read, understood and are able to discuss clearly the course readings. Use/cite ample illustrative field based examples from the course readings (not from other classes or from your own libraries) to illustrate your/the authors points of views, theories, argument, etc. for the goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your ability to think and write about the course readings in an intelligible and coherent manner.
Answer to each question should be about4- 5 pages long (double space). The paper should be between 9-10- pages (double space). You need not to use a formal writing style such as of APA. Simply identify the sources from the texts.
