Both Tobin’s article, ‘Japanese Preschools and the Pedagogy of Selfhood’ and Hess & Azuma’s, ‘Cultural Support for Schooling, Contrasts between Japan and the United States,’ discuss aspects of children’s/students’ culturally shaped dispositions and how these traits (or ‘self’) play a critical role in supporting the educational environments and curriculums, in which they function. (1) Describe and explain how culture help shape such dispositions and (2) how they (dispositions) are vital to support the education environments and curriculum in which they function.
Question 2: Self in Culture – based on the readings in q2 file.
Psychological anthropologists during the last two decades of the Twentieth Century turned their attention to the subjective, internal contents – i.e., psychological experience, processes and functions — of an individual under the umbrella concept of “self” (LeVie, Self in Culture, pp. 241-244). Describe and explain the contents of ‘self’ as defined here in terms of how they (‘contents’) are mediated by culture.
Note: Culture here refers to “collective (shared) organization of normative ideas,” (LeVine) wherein such ideas may be embedded in language, philosophical traditions (e.g. Confucianism, Greek philosophy), house design, emotional experiences and expressions, or sense of morality, etc. (this is not an exhaustive list). Use all reading materials.
