Personal Statement

My interest in social work dates back to my childhood years, when I was inspired by my mother who worked in this field. The whole community respected her for devoting energy and passion in helping the whole area. Through her inspiration, I gained the professional commitment of seeking to help other people to gain their respect and dignity. Through a social library my mother owned, I was exposed to a vast of information in this field that gave me knowledge in relationship building. It is here that I gained my first experience in relationship building. Since then, I have always wanted to develop a career in social work.

Although I am crippled, I wear artificial legs, which are almost as effective as natural ones. My sensory ability is average and functions quite well. I am able to learn using all my senses that include visual, hearing and touching. Having been crippled since I was young, I have been able to adapt and compete with normal students in a regular class.

With the vast reading of social literature from my mother’s library, I gained knowledge in intervening, evaluating and assessing various situations to come up with the best option for resolution. I also developed apathy skills that help me in making objective decisions for not only other people but also myself (Crane, 2012).

I am excellent in both verbal and written communication, which I gained through my experience in various fields of work such as providing academic counseling and planning to students, offering secretarial support to multiple physicians, administering recreation assessments and developing program plans for individuals. This also increased my self-awareness where I am able to make and maintain good relationships with peers and colleagues. In addition, my experience allows me to work with people of different statures and in different environmental contexts. Finally, I am enthusiast about developing a career in social work, which is my biggest goal in life.
