Paradox of Life for Fresh Graduates
Brooks observes that many of today’s youth find themselves at a dilemma when they graduate from institutions of higher learning since these institutions teach them to live and think in a largely structured way while the world they are getting into is highly unstructured and dynamic. There is a lot of hype over independence and autonomy, which is misleading in many ways since this, is mostly the time that these young adults are looking to set up roots by making commitments. Most graduates find it hard to land positions in their fields of study and those who do have to work under strict supervision and structure, which denies them the opportunities to experiment and create new better ways of production. The state of the economy also does little to ensure their job security and equitable pay since companies are more invested in themselves than they are in their communities and employees, as they have to ensure they make profits amid the high prevailing tax rates.
Kolb review of Brooks’s article identifies that the piece did very little in providing the audience with enough specific references to its claims and that Brook has gone out of his way to separate himself from the group that he is addressing. Kolb thinks that this could alienate the new graduates that the article seems to address while also limiting the scope of the message by aligning it more with the educated middle class. Kolb however applauds Brook’s writing style as encouraging the reader to analyze the education system critically and brings them to the point of realizing an objective way forward in his conclusion.
Brooks has many valid points that make one look at the state of the education system with regard to prevailing economic state of the world and brings about a realization of the need for revolutionizing the whole system. This will ensure that everybody is given a fair chance to earn a living while contributing to his or her society and the world. Brooks adopts a style that elicits the reader to use their own experience and knowledge to understand the shortcomings of the system then form their own solutions. Kolb’s is very skeptical of Brooks and overlooks the power of the internet in disseminating information. Most of the information she finds lacking in Brooks article are easily found on youtube and the websites of the various academic institutions. She also fails to realize that by creating the separation with the subject group, Brooks was looking to increase his objectivity and not to alienate a part of his audience.
