The highest rising age group of people is that of the older adults categorized as those who turned sixty-five years of age by 2011. The Healthy People 2020 has a mandate of promoting healthy lifestyles for this group. It is projected that this grouping will most likely develop one chronic disease per individual by the year 2030. These chronic diseases include arthritis, diabetes, heart failure and dementia. According to HealthyPeople.gov (2013), many of these people are hospitalized or admitted into nursing homes since they are no longer capable of living independently at home. The aim therefore is to improve the health, functions and quality of life for the older adults in the society.

The main mandate set for the elderly is prevention and provision of long-term services and supports. Under prevention, it is purposed that a there will be a boost in the proportions of the older people who seek clinical preventive services,  an increase in the care of those with one or more chronic conditions but are confident in managing it and raise of the healthcare workers. In long-term services and supports, developments in the reduction of the total older people who are not in institutions is intended, including those with disabilities and have need for special and long-standing care.

Reduction of the number of unpaid caregivers, rate of pressure and ulcer related hospitalizations for the old and an increase in the number of government agencies that address victims, perpetrators and cases of old people neglect and abuse are among the objectives (HealthyPeople.gov, 2013). Some of the issues challenging this cause include the coordination of care, establishment of quality determination, identification and training of people to care for the old, research and analysis for training the providers with the right equipment they need for the job and assisting the older people in managing their own care (HealthyPeople.gov, 2013).
