Narrative Essay

After the long shift at the hospital, I casually strolled to the bus station. A slight agitation began to creep in as I wondered whether I would be able to catch a bus since it was already past 10 pm. To make matters worse, the stage was notorious for its insecurity, which was why the city authority erected bright streetlights every 100 yards. Luckily, there was one last bus making a final round before concluding the day. The bus was nearly full, so I boarded it and took a seat at the back. I immediately began to doze off, as the day had been long and tiring. All I could think of was getting into my bed and rejuvenate myself sufficiently for the next day. The bus made several more stops, and the brakes were so loud that I woke up each time the bus came to a screeching halt.

As I looked through the window, I realised that we had already reached my neighbourhood. My house was just two more stops away. I could hardly wait to fall asleep in my bed. As the bus made a halt just near my house, a group of men in masks suddenly boarded the bus, and blocked the door in such a way to prevent anyone from alighting. I had never experienced a robbery before, but I had heard enough stories with excruciating detail to know that this was one of them. Loud shrieks could be heard from passengers in the front seat, which sent a wave of panic. The driver was instructed to redirect the bus to another unspecified location while the rest of us were ordered to avoid being uncooperative or else the consequences could be dire.

Just to make sure that he was understood, the masked man, who appeared to be the ringleader, pulled out a pistol from the side of his waist and waved it around to make sure everyone got the message. At that point, I had already stood up as I was planning to alight, but the sight of the gun made a chill run down my spine. I was not sure what exactly to do, as I was the only one standing. With my legs trembling, I trotted to the back seat where I was seated. Before I could reach my seat, one of the masked men had already caught up with me. “You! You with the green sweater! What do you think you’re doing?” Overwrought, I quickly gazed around the bus, hoping to see any other passenger who had worn a green sweater. Unfortunately, I was the only one. It was clear that these robbers only wished to relieve us of our valuables, but their aggressiveness led me to believe that they were capable of causing much more harm in the event that their demands were not met.

The other three masked men had already begun to search through each passenger’s bags, removing wallets, watches, expensive looking shoes, and cellular phones. While two men ransacked the passenger’s pockets and bags, the third man carried a large black sack where these valuables were thrown in. As the leader approached me, he shoved with considerable force, which made me fall in the seat behind me. He then raised his gun, which was tightly clutched in his right hand as he pulled me closer to his face with his left hand. “What were you trying to do?” he asked. I was utterly puzzled by this question and found it almost impossible to compose myself enough to construct a coherent sentence in reply. “Are you a cop?” he asked again, this time, more loudly, to which I frantically shook my head. He proceeded to search me while at the same time ordering me to remove my clothes. I was slightly hesitant, as I failed to understand why the masked man paid more attention to me than the other passengers. I figured it was because I was the only one who was standing when they boarded the bus. After noticing my reluctance to remove my clothes, he struck my forehead with the side of the gun, which made me let out a loud shriek.

I could already feel the warmth and wetness of my blood as it oozed down to the side of my face. The masked man then removed the safety of his gun, as he got ready to pull the trigger. People had already started to cry out in protest, but none of them dared to physically stop the gunman. The gun was already pointed at me, and I knew that this was the end for me. I never thought my story would end this way. A brief loud siren sounded just a few meters behind our bus. Immediately after, another police car came to a halt right in front of the bus, which forced the driver to stop. The masked men knew they were cornered, so they figured their only escape was through the window and into the nearby woods. They were never caught. However, my life was spared on that day, which was the most important thing.
