Pros

Firstly, this funding is imperative in contributing to the economic progression as well as national prosperity of the state because the taxes are well managed, regulated, and invested into meaningful projects (“Financing Federal-Aid Programs – Highway Trust Fund” n.p). Secondly, with such structures, there is high generation of revenue derived from motor fuel taxes without necessarily affecting the fuel prices. Lastly and most importantly, with increased tax rates on motor fuel, users will more encouraged to conserve and preserve the environment through reduction of congestion within the major cities and towns in the state (“Financing Federal-Aid Programs – Highway Trust Fund” n.p).

Cons

It is evident that the there is heavy reliance by the federal transportation funding structure on the taxes collected from petroleum driven motor vehicles (“Financing Federal-Aid Programs – Highway Trust Fund” n.p). Therefore, evaluating this reliance from a sustainability viewpoint, it cannot be sustained over a long duration particularly due to the effects of petroleum use on the climate (Berman n.p). In addition, increment of fuel taxes has faced quite strong opposition from motor carriers hence crippling any benefits that might result from this action.

Wal-Mart has embarked on sustainability efforts directed towards reducing green house emissions, which has greatly affected the climate and contributed to global warming (Berman n.p). With the reduction of over an estimated 20 million metric tones of GHG, the larger logistics industry will be affected drastically basing on the fact that its supply chain is larger that its operational department globally (Berman n.p). The effect will be positive as reiterated by analysts primarily because through reduction of carbon supply, the suppliers will reap great benefits as well as face new pressure on their supply chain for more environmentally friendly raw materials.
