Medication of Mental Disorders

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that makes an individual to hallucinate and appear confused (Miller and Mason 57). This strange social behavior limits the ability of that person to express himself/herself emotionally. As such, it makes someone to have a split personality. Despite the debate whether the various symptoms should be treated differently, the use of antipsychotic tablets is recommended. Similarly, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorders are some of the additional conditions that such victims may exhibit. These too need to be subjected to the same kind of treatment. By so doing, the activities of the dopamine receptor are suppressed thereby lowering the prevalence of suicides and other side effects.

Therefore, a number of psychological therapies have been formulated to treat patients with the above diseases. In psychoanalysis, the patient is made to lie on a flat surface and encouraged to utter whatever his mind thinks as at that time. During this exercise, he/she initially becomes resistant to expressing emotions but gradually builds trust in the therapist and reveals personal information. This helps in overcoming anxiety. Sometimes, the setting can be formal like in an office so that the body language of such victims can be studied for clues about suicidal tendencies in the case of depressed patients. Similarly, the humanistic approach occurs when a therapist listens, restates, interrogates and acknowledges any feelings exhibited by the sick person. While so doing, he/she is not supposed to be judgmental. Rather, the individual should focus on raising the patient’s self-esteem. By so doing, the victim’s morale is lifted and such motivation increases the positive energy required during recovery.

Likewise, behavioral therapy is applied when unwanted behaviors have to be eliminated. For example, sensitive sexual disorders and phobias are not analyzed in detail to prevent the subject form getting hysterical. In contrast, the patient is regularly introduced to their phobias as this builds their confidence in the long-term and makes them immune to the objects that they fear. Hence, they show less anxiety. Importantly, this exposure may be done in virtual or real environments. Furthermore, people who suffer from bipolar disorders may be treated using an incentive technique whereby moral behaviors are rewarded while undesired ones are punished. These tokens are offered to assist the victims in realizing the right mannerisms expected of them thus making them abandon bad habits. The higher the stakes involved, the bigger the rewards and the greater the improvement that shall be witnessed.

Cognitive therapy is another method as well that seeks to change the decision making process of patients into valuable personalities (Fairburn 119). The altering of how individuals think significantly impacts their actions due to the enormous influence that thoughts have on a person’s activities. For instance, if a person becomes depressed by thinking that he/she can never be happy due to a past failure, that patient is bound to live a sad and miserable life. However, if gentle, honest questioning and persuasive conversations are done to convince the party of the benefits in a change of opinions, these ailments can be treated. In fact, the holding of such sessions in groups is common and this helps to show that there are others sufferers from identical conditions. Moreover, any one who successfully completes the program and recovers acts as a role model for the rest and this is a motivating factor for others to emulate. They will become passionate in completing the program and they are bound to be ambitious to defeat these diseases.

Consequently, a patient’s family is integral in the recovery process. A family therapy routine is often used to improve communication skills and build positive relationships. This supportive network is relied upon to provide hope to the patient, offer a new perception of life and to present a caring, trustworthy relationship that is vital in mental growth. Therefore, counselors and physicians are incorporated to assess the progress of such victims and to make appropriate recommendations. Nevertheless, prescription drugs are also favored as they are able to control the fevers, pain and spread of the disease. Stimulant drugs are taken as well to stabilize the mood of the victims thereby preventing them from committing violent acts that may be harmful to themselves and others in the vicinity. This form of biomedical therapy is laden with the latest drugs and medication available to take decisive action on the nervous system.

Similarly, an eclectic approach is employed to present healing techniques that are tailored to the client’s problems (Myers 5). In this format, the physician or therapist does not force the patient to adhere to certain beliefs or attitudes. Rather, they have a broad consensus on the values that are considered moral and work towards attaining them. As such, the sick person would require constant reassuring about his/her progress in conquering the split personality syndrome. In order to achieve this, subtle messages need to be sent either verbally or visually through sign language on the right and wrong habits to possess. This method should be aimed at changing the mindset from confusion to clarity thereby enabling the individual to make rational decisions.
