Local Knowledge Task

The Ngunnawal people are the custodians of the ACT and other surrounding regions, and the ACT government acknowledges this. Different institutions such as the local aboriginal land council or the state department for indigenous affairs are the initial points of contact. A person should begin by contacting these institutions, as they will provide the information needed about the traditional groups, and about the welcome to the country ceremony. It is crucial to recognize the traditional owners at meetings and events, and to invite the elders to the ‘Welcome to the Country’ ceremony. This is done before the beginning of any gathering. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island custodians of the land or elders welcome people to their land through Welcome to the Country, which may be in the form of dance, speech, song, or any other ceremony.

The protocol forms chosen are diverse and they vary according to the people and the regions. The people have practiced this form of protocol for many years. The method used for acknowledging the elders and custodians depends on the knowledge that the speaker has of the group. If the speaker is not sure of the group in attendance or if there is more than one group represented, then he can use the general acknowledgement. The speaker can also choose to use an acknowledgement that is specific to the community or location of the meeting if he has the necessary information to do so. This involves mentioning the name of the specific people and the region.

The main Aboriginal languages in the area are the Ngunnawal and the Ngambri. Canberra gets its name from the Ngambri. Clans such as Ngurmai and Namitch are significant in the region. Different Aboriginal and Torres Strait people from other parts of the country have settled in the region. Thus, although Canberra is the traditional country for the Ngunnawal and the Ngambri, it is also home to people from other languages. The people have maintained an oral tradition, where they have passed on messages to subsequent generations.

They esteem this information highly, and only the elders have knowledge of crucial information. However, this is changing as more people continue learning more about the western ideals, and as they continue implementing the things, they have learnt. Access to other information has enabled them to capture their stories through film. This new development has enabled many people to learn more about the different cultural practices and beliefs of the people. Although the people have strived to maintain their traditions, they are constantly influenced by much of the western world, and they have embraced many of the practices of the western world, which they have blended with their own culture. For instance, music artists have embraced modern and westernized music genres such as hip-hop. They also seek to communicate to more people, and they have opted to use English as their main form of communication.

The local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island have localized their culture and some cultural aspects may differ with other cultural aspects of other regions. The people focus their knowledge in their areas of attachment. Gaining permission from the right people is essential, especially when seeking to speak or act on behalf of another. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people share some cultural elements although they differ in others. They believe in family support, and the family holds an important role. The people have a mutual responsibility, and they share resources. There is a common respect for the elders in both communities.

Experience Planning Sheet Template

Experience Planning tool
Educators Name
Name of Experience Teaching children about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait :Islander culture through the use of visual arts and site seeing
Date Presented
Number of Children Twelve
Ages of Children Between the ages of five and six
Reason for presenting this experience The reason for presenting this experience is to teach the children about the culture of the Aboriginal people
Name of a local aboriginal group Ngunnawal
How the plan reflects an authentic Aboriginal perspective relevant to the local area The children will use the traditional elements of visual art representation, which include clays and different forms of material. This is different from the modern forms which they are used to, and it will give them a chance to learn something that is distinctly Aboriginal. The children will be able to learn more about the importance of the land to the people. They will visit identified sections in the school, where they will get to learn how they associate with the land.
Developmental priorities/learning opportunities using knowledge of child development and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives Ø  The child will be able to identify different elements of land such as different plants and any creature in the area

Ø  The child will be encouraged to note the importance of having different animals and plants on the land

Ø  The child will learn about the importance of maintaining and conserving the land and all the natural elements

What to consider when setting up the learning environment There are several factors to consider when setting up the learning environment:

·         Since this is mostly an outdoor activity, the lesson has to take place when the weather is conducive for such form of learning.

·         The identified site has to be in a naturally rich place, where the students can see different animals, insects and plants.

·         The place has to be safe for the children to use, which means that it should be free from any harmful element

How will you introduce and involve the children in your experience?

Ø  Words to use to encourage the children to participate in the experience

Ø  Will you need to demonstrate any aspect of the experience?

Ø  Will a peer be encouraged for this experience to help the child?

Ø  Verbal/non-verbal support given to encourage the child

Ø  What positive acknowledgement of the child’s efforts are you going to give that shows that you are interested and identifies the action at the same time

Ø  Will this experience require direct/indirect guidance?

·         I will begin by introducing the Aboriginal culture to the children since they may not have an idea who the Aboriginal people are. Once the children learn about the Aboriginal people, they will know the importance of taking part in the experience.

·         I will need to take an active part in the experience since I will be with them on the site to show them different plants and animals

·         The children will learn best when they work in small groups because this will help them to work together and to gain an interest in what they are learning

·         I will talk to the children constantly throughout the learning experience. I will tell them statements such as “well done, for the work done” to encourage them

·         I will ensure that I acknowledge the children once they are able to identify any form of plant, animal, or physical feature which we have learnt

·         This experience will require both direct and indirect guidance

How will you record the child’s experiences? The children will paint their observations of the sites including different forms of insects, animals, and plants, or any other form of natural element which they have observed, while I will use a video to record our activities outdoors.
Why you have chosen this method of documentation I have chosen to use a video recorder for several reasons.

·         The production of a DVD from the recorded video will ensure that I have a permanent record of the learning experience. This will ensure that I can look at the DVD in future, and learn from the experience of the lessons.

·         The video recording will enable me to record all the children’s questions and concerns in addition to recording their participation in the experience

·         The children’s work samples through the paintings they create will enable me to know whether the children have learnt anything from the experience.

·         The other reason for recording the event is that it is the most appropriate form of documentation for this particular experience.

How you will provide feedback to the local Aboriginal groups who may have been consulted or participated in the experience I will give the local community a copy of the recording that I make from the experience
Reflection/evaluation of experience

Ø  How the children responded?

Ø  Did you provide a suitable environment?

Ø  Did you as an educator say and do the right thing?

Ø  What should you consider the next time?

Ø  What did you learn from this experience?

Ø  Did you gain any feedback from families, community or children?

·          The children were excited about the learning experience and many of them participated well

·         I provided an enabling environment, which encouraged the children to participate in the activities

·         I believe that I said and did the right thing because I did not receive any complaints and I was able to get the results I needed from the children

·         Now that I have gained substantial experience, I believe that I can work with more children the next time and I can include many activities

·         This experience gave me the chance to introduce something new to the children and do it effectively

·         Most of the feedback I gained was from the children, whose excitement and interest throughout the experience enabled me to know that they were learning well

Follow up ideas I will talk to the children concerning the experience often. Most of the things they will have learnt are also relevant in other areas
