Linking Career and Community for higher Success

Modern day work environments are becoming increasingly challenging with each passing year. The strategies and methods of getting ahead are becoming increasingly complex. Networking and social aspects are fast becoming the drivers for promotions and career growth. The more noise a person can make about their capabilities, the better their chances of beating their competition. That is probably the reason why there are more women professionals with higher career trajectories than men in the employment arena (Nanton and Alfred 15). Contrary to popular belief, most of them are not sleeping their way to the top. Women are more astute at expressing their strengths and weaknesses than men are. Their soft skills ensure that they get the help they need to overcome their weaknesses while building a brand around themselves and their accomplishments. To put it simply, career growth is like a tree falling deep in the forest and another falling in the middle of a city. Although both will fall, the one deep in the forest will get little, if any, coverage.

Networking boosts a person’s career development by increasing their ease of access to information, resources, and support. Success in the workplace requires one to effectively show how they can use the knowledge they possess to benefit their organizations. Social capital puts the word out there that you want something. Thus, when it becomes available, you will be in line for consideration. Although creating strong networks significantly increases one’s career development prospects, caution should be exercised. One should treat everybody they meet with the utmost respect regardless of their status or position. Enhancing oneself as a brand takes more than just mingling with the CEOs and managers. Sometimes it is the most unexpected of people who can give ones career the shot to stardom they have long been waiting for.
