Justifications for Abstaining From the War with Germany

The war in Europe poses opportunities and threats against the United States of America in equal measure. It is imperative that the nation remains neutral during this war so that it can remain in a position where it profits from the conflict while minimizing the threat posed by the Germans and their allies. The United States is likely to lose much more than it will gain if it sends her troops to Europe to stand along with the allies in their struggle. Abstaining from the war in Europe will present America with a chance to profit from the hostilities.

The first reason why I voted against a war with Germany is that in its current situation, the United States of America is in a position that allows it to benefit from the war in Europe. Two groups of nations are fighting the war in Europe. The first side features Britain, France and Russia while the other side features Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy (Brinkley 604). The war between these two parties presents the American government with a unique position to profit from the war. By staying neutral within the war, the country will be able to maintain a business relationship with the two sides allowing it to immerse itself in a lucrative trade with both the Allies and the Central Powers (Brinkley 605). The war presents the American government with an opportunity to sell manufactured items, foodstuff and raw materials to different countries in the conflict (Doenecke 45).

Another reason why America should not join the war in Europe is that doing so would expose American troops to great danger. The trench warfare that has characterized the conflict in Europe will forever be known for its brutality. The Germans are using machine guns and artillery to devastating effect (Brinkley 610). Sending American troops to the battlefields in Europe is tantamount to sending them to death in the trenches because of the new technology with which the war is being fought. Therefore, it is better for American soldiers to stay home safe with their families and friends while the government continues to reap the profits of the war in Europe.
