Social mobility as the index of openness can be considered the reason behind inequalities though the factor does not account for all existent variance in the community. Vertical mobility in the American society is subject to factors that influence the socioeconomic scale. These factors include income variance, property gains, social status, and position. Persons who gain in any of the stated factors are considered upwardly mobile while those who lose are viewed as downwardly mobile. Suburbanization and social inequality are dynamic and interdependent factors that dependent on community efforts determine the social structure of a republic.

Self-reflection associates my education with an institution located in an affluent suburb. In such a school as highlighted by Witt, there is a hidden curriculum that dictates the accepted behaviors, compliance, and reward system. All societal units from the family to the school administration employ the interaction process reinforcing the values, norms, and beliefs that result in existent inequalities. For instance, with greater compliance and obedience to the societal hierarchy, one justifies the status quo that in turn determines the economic success for an individual. In meaning, an individual who has a creative thought, respects, and utilizes the power hyperlink in the society has greater chances of success. It is difficult for a person to come from a poor background and success economically without the intervention of the people in higher social classes.
