Description of Field Activities

I supervised different parents while at the Parenting Time Center. Similarly, I was tasked with making phone calls aimed at soliciting in formation about their attendance in supervised visitations. Accordingly, I sought and recorded information detailing the reactions of the subjects after the completion of the services as well as the frequency of seeing the child. Furthermore, I was engaged in live sessions whereby I explored the nature of co-parenting. Obtaining feedback on the children’s behavior at home and school were also part of my responsibilities as well as making evaluations of the information provided. I also studied the relationship between the custodial parents and the non-custodial ones.

Significant Field Events

Working at the Parenting time Center exposed me to the challenges facing parents in fulfilling their duties while surrounded by a rapidly changing global environment. In particular, I was involved in the repairing of a relationship between a former drug addict and his two sons. It was evident that the initial meeting was conducted under a tense atmosphere due to lack of regular integration among them. Therefore, I broached the idea of him playing certain games with them to aid in creating a bond. Consequently, I became a passive participant in the development of their new friendships in order to allow them time for personal fulfillment. I was delighted with their progress because on subsequent visits,   I observed a closeness that stemmed from the board games and their reunion was a testament to the newfound love.

Reflection & Feeling

Having worked with children of different ages, it is evident that they pay attention to non-verbal communication as a means of detecting honesty (Duncan 308). Interventions from social services are usually limited by the amount of information available to its officials. However, I observed that children of all ages like to feel valued and have a sense of belonging because it improves their confidence and makes them hopeful of a better life. Sharing even a laugh with them helps to replace their sorrows and boost their morale. In fact, even the adults I encountered witnessed the influence of a wink or a shrug. In most instances, the reception to having a smile or listening approvingly to the victims as they relayed their stories was positive. It made the children lose their shame as well as make the decision to renew their quest to reunite with their families.

Integration of Theory and Practices

The numerous cases I dealt with at the center provided ideal opportunities for using cognitive behavioral intervention theories to restore social order in the affected families. In particular, I realized that the above client was finding it difficult to bond with his boys due to their fixed association of him with his past drug addiction. Nevertheless, it was necessary for them to acknowledge his transition and begin to embrace him for the changes he had made. The inclusion of blocks with cards containing personality questions was very resourceful because it allowed them to interrogate each other while having a few light moments. While this strategy helped them to face their fears and create a common ground for their relationship, it was also vital in illustrating a change of behavior thereby encouraging redemption of feelings towards each other. By so doing, their father’s drug habit was revisited but they too made a commitment to give him another chance at rekindling their family union. Therefore, the use of board games facilitated their bonding (Duncan 312).
