The term bias can be defined as taking a certain position at the expense of another. This means that when one is biased the person may take a stand against another even if the other side offers a better opinion (Kent, 2011). The word stereotype on the other hand means the judgement of people basing on their identity. A persons judgement is however not usually the actual thing. Prejudice on the other hand is the act of making judgement before waiting to know the real person or thing. It is however more of an attitude. Finally, the term bigotry can be defined, as prejudicing opinions that a person believes are different from his or her own. The similarity that is depicted in all these definitions is that each term means discriminating against a person, opinions and ideas because of their difference. However, there is a slight difference between all these terms in that being biased is taking sides, stereotyping is prejudging basing on identity, prejudice is prejudgment while bigotry means discriminating.
Discrimination is defined as the unfair treatment of a person based on their racial background, ethnic group, social status and class (Kent, 2011). Discrimination can also be defined as making distinctions based on a person’s ethnicity or even social status. These terms may sound similar; however, there is a difference between the term discrimination and the four terms above. The main difference between discrimination and these other terms is that in discrimination a person has to have some knowledge about the person being judged unlike in the others where the person only makes assumptions.
The perception of the people living with disabilities can be defined by a number of classifications. For instance, there is the Sociocultural conditioning in which societal norms, standards and expectations define disability. The second perception is defined by childhood Influences. In this classification, a child’s rearing determines his or her attitude towards disability. The other classification that defines the perception of people living with disabilities is the psychodynamic mechanisms. This means that a person’s psychological experiences play a major role in perception of those living with disabilities. Finally, there are non-disabled people who perceive disability as a punishment for sin. This means that the non-disabled believe that a disabled person is dangerous and sinful and is paying for his sins (Kent, 2011).
Albeism can be defined as judging a person’s ability to perform due to his or her disability (Kent, 2011). The perception of those living with disabilities has contributed to cultural and individual albeism. For instance, these people face stigmatization. This is because they are seen as a minority group that that cannot contribute in society. These people are also denied opportunities that they are qualified. This is because the society already assumes that they are unable to perform that role and do not even given them a chance. Society also assumes that there are specific roles that these people can play. In that, it is believed that they can only do certain jobs. Another thing is that being that some individuals believe that disability is because of punishment for sin; they decide to avoid these people and do not want them near them. Finally, being that those living with disability are believed to be weak, they may miss job opportunities. This is because the employers will not believe they can be able to perform the duty assigned.
