Healthy community programs encompassed in the national Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are an efficient approach used by local and federal administrations in the United States with the main intent of reducing various chronic diseases affecting the general population. Through these systems, the community takes part in enabling vulnerable people to make suitable decisions regarding their health in addition to assisting other people to maintain practices that promote physical fitness. One of the societies, which have used various strategies within the healthy community programs to enhance the wellbeing of its inhabitants in the New York City. To begin with, thirty-three health facilities in this metropolitan area have been part of the Latch on NYC project. This program campaigns for breast-feeding as opposed to the use of infant formula. This scheme has benefited more than 100,000 mothers and infants annually and has aided in accomplishing the objectives set to suppress chronic diseases related to nutrition (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d).

Moreover, in order to reduce incidences of obesity and other nutritional disorders in the region, all public schools in the area have to ensure that the food offered to the learners meets the set City Agency Food and Beverage Standards. These requirements regulate the amount of nutrients in the foodstuffs provided in these educational centers including sodium, fat, and calories. Likewise, 1.1 million learners in these pubic schools also benefit from low-fat milk offered through this community program (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d). Mount Sinai School of Medicine has also engaged in these programs with its focus being to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in this metropolis. More than 1000 individuals have benefited from the screening program with those diagnosed with the disease acquiring medical care from local clinics that specialize in treating this chronic illness.
