Explain What You Have Read and What You Learned From the Readings
The readings are quite revealing of the nature of man and his role in civilization. If the man in a nation is wretched and quick to anger, then the nation falls. A nation is guided by spiritual principles, and the fact that metaphysical and theological principles are no longer applied in politics leaves the nation in a position where it easily undermines others, and exploits them. Civilization is the highest ideal of reality that man can achieve. Evidently, European countries were far much ahead and more civilized than the rest of the world, obviously because of the scientific revolution, and the changes that came about during the Age of Enlightenment.
The speech given by the French Prime Minister of the late 19th century clearly indicates the European superiority over other countries in the world. He categorically claims that because as Europeans they were more civilized, they had the obligation to civilize the rest of the world. I addition to this, they compared themselves to the rest of Europe and emphasized on the need for colonial expansion, in order to expand their economy. This explains why the English police officer is in Burma. The colonial expansion was adopted by England as well, thus explaining the presence of the British in Burma. Naturally, colonization came with resistance. This is why the police officer is facing many social issues with the locals in Burma, because of their blatant loathe for the European colonizers. From the short story, the Europeans seemed upset that the police officer had killed an elephant, yet it is of more value as compared to the Indian who was killed. This statement alone indicates the evils of civilization of the selfish nations that are awash with morally corrupt individuals.
