This is a text-based essay based on the articles about successful immigrants that we have read. Only use the article to write this essay with direct quotes.
ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:
Introduction: Use a FUNNEL intro. Start with some GENERAL comments about immigrants.Mention some of the hardships or challenges immigrants may experience. Comment on the degree of difficulty newcomers may have while trying to build a new life. Mention that the articles indicate that immigrants may seem to have certain qualities or actions in common that help them achieve success.End with a TOP thesis with your 3 factors. Remember that the thesis MUST be ALL ONE sentence!
Body Paragraphs:
EVIDENCE for each factor:
That is, you must explain/define WHAT the factor is. What is it that a person DOES (or doesn’t do) when using this factor to reach success? How do we know when someone is using this factor? You may use a dictionary definition for the factor if you wish, but be sure to say the definition is from the dictionary. Be sure to choose strong, specific factors that are clearly important for immigrants—NOT just for achieving success for people in general.
ANALYSIS of the factor:
That is, you must explain and show WHY and HOW the factor is important and how it leads to or ensures success, especially and specifically for immigrants. You must also include specific details/examples from the articles or TED Talk that support your ideas here.
Conclusion:
Start the conclusion with a THESIS ECHO. Then you can add some thoughts about what success for an immigrant really is: Is it being rich, famous, happy, having material things, a successful career, a happy family, being able to help others…? You can also add some thoughts about what else is important when someone finally achieves success. If someone from one of our readings really shows what success means to you, you can refer briefly to the person again and show how he/she exemplifies true success in your opinion. Make sure your conclusion is a FULL paragraph—not just a couple sentences!
