Involvement in this lesson will enable students to:

Understand, interpret and relate to translanguaging as a theory of language that recognizes and legitimizes the authentic language practices of bilinguals/multilinguals.
Recognize unique literacy practices among bilinguals/multilinguals.
Identify pedagogical practices that tap on the authentic language and literacy assets of bilingual/multilingual learners.
Examine different cases of emergent bilingual writers and recognize implications for educators.

Assignment instructions and guidelines:

Purpose
The purpose of the discussion forum is to exchange ideas with class members in order to expand ideas and perspectives. Participating in class discussion is a vital part of an online course. Participating in the discussion forum represents a significant portion of the graded work in this class.

Step 1: Complete all the readings in this lesson.

Step 2: In this discussion forum, you are expected to produce at least one substantive original contribution in your post to respond to the following prompts

Discussion 3: How does the theory of translanguaging help us understand the authentic language practices of emergent bilingual/multilingual learners? How does this perspective change or confirm your own perspective or experiences? How can we leverage these linguistic practices in our instruction?

Your original discussion contribution should:

Provide a relevant response to the prompt
Identify the key ideas/most important points taken from the readings
Include an example of a professional and/or personal experience directly related to the prompt
Cite readings to support your comments using APA style

In this discussion forum read and review your class members’ contributions and respond to at least one post/contribution other than your own ( I will send you the classmate’s post once you send the discussion post)

As with any discussion, you may agree or disagree with a person. In your response(s), please elaborate on the answers, provide specific examples, etc.
Responses to your class members should be substantive in nature and expand the discussion. Simply thanking a class member for his/her contribution is insufficient.

FAQs
What does “substantive response” mean?
A substantive response contains beginning, middle, and ending thoughts. Since you will be demonstrating a link to course readings or related materials, documentation for at least your original contribution will also be expected. Responses such as “Good idea”, “I agree”, and so on, are not considered substantive unless elaborated.

How do I document responses to other class members?
Document responses to other class members by using their names in the narrative, for example, “Just like Jamie, I also…”

Must I have a reference list for each of my contributions?
No, you only need a reference list when you have cited a work in your contribution. Your original contribution will have citations and references. The reference list should be placed at the end of the contribution. Video contributions should still provide a written reference to pieces mentioned.
