It is correct to state that emotional reactions to stimuli at different stages in life are preparatory for the subsequent encounters, which leads to maturation. For instance, if a child is bullied at school by the peers, the first reaction to the stimuli in the particular environment is to fight back. Therefore, when he or she is bullied for the second and third time, their first emotional reaction is to fight back. The child then develops into a defensive individual. Such an example reveals that the article is correct when discussing the role of emotions in the human development process.

The article seeks to highlight the fact that there is little empirical evidence to support the claims that emotion regulation improves with chronological age. Theories such as developmental functionalism and adaptive functioning are instrumental in explaining emotional regulation. Adaptive functioning and developmental functionalism are theories that explore the behavior of people and their reactions to stimuli across their lifespan. It is correct to state that age-related emotional regulation is minimal. This is because of the emotional reaction to stimuli that recurs tends to prevail throughout the lifespan. What this means is that during different developmental stages in life, an individual learns to emotionally react to various stimuli, and adopt the reactions throughout life. Therefore, when an individual reacts to being bullied by fighting, there are high chances that the same reaction is witnessed during adolescence and adulthood. This behavior strongly suggests that emotional regulation is not affected by age.
