Eavesdroppers

Eavesdropping refers to the act of listening secretly to personal conversations among individuals without receiving their approval (“Eavesdrop”). Usually, the persons who engage in this act, commonly known as eavesdroppers, tend to be unethical and in most cases, tend to use the information they have overheard for malicious or amoral intent. Originally, the term ‘eavesdrop’ was derived from the respective noun (eavesdropper). However, in order to draw a distinction, the noun usually referred to a person who positioned himself or herself near the eavesdrop, or in close proximity to the house for purposes of overhearing private conservations. The most example of the term relates to its utilization as an art feature in the Hampton Court during the reign of Henry VIII. Initially, Henry VIII possessed an acquisitive nature that inclined towards real estate (Byrd 1)

Hence, as nobility, he took over numerous palaces and castles owned by the monarchy. Despite this, Henry VIII supplemented other facilities by trade, purchase, or debt reimbursement, specifically via reclamation towards the crown (Byrd 2). In other cases, the king gained the respective buildings via the recovery of property made possible by the disbanding of assets previously possessed by the Roman Catholic Church as well as through the avenue of gift (Byrd 2). In the premature years of Henry VIII, one of his main advisors, Cardinal Thomas granted the palace of Hampton Court. Upon receivership, Henry VIII remodeled it by carving fine embellishments within the beams of the ceiling, known as Eavesdroppers (Byrd 3). These faces which resembled the cherubic beings, smiled down on the guests, reiterating to them that the king was well aware of all matters taking place within the court via his servants and courtiers.
