Baby Boomers

‘Baby Boomers’ is a term that refers to the generation of people who were born in the years that immediately succeeded the end of the Second World War (between 1945 and 1960). As soldiers from the war returned to their homes, there was a spike in births inside the United States and Britain (Wallop 1). This generation grew up in a world lacking in technology and requiring a lot of reconstruction. Due to the state of the world at that time, the Baby Boomers developed good work ethics and became hard workers with a lot of dedication. However, they desire growth and require personal gratification from their work. This generation was also quite optimistic and enjoyed the fruits of their labor as they achieved varying levels of success (Wallop 1). They became the first generation to travel around the world to enjoy their vacations rather than fight in wars. This willingness to spend their money has become a distinctive characteristic of the Baby Boomers (Wallop 1). Additionally, the generation is notable for having acquired more wealth than any other that came before or after has. However, other generations that succeeded them still have time to amass wealth.

Generation X

Generation X refers to the people that were born after the Baby Boomers. Members of Generation X were born between 1960 and 1980 into a world that had changed remarkably over the previous two decades (Wallop 1). As such, members of Generation X were able to avoid fighting in major wars and enjoy free or affordable education. Interestingly, these factors did not give Generation X a bright outlook on the world like that of the Baby Boomers. Instead, members of Generation X became notable for their cynical and pessimistic views of the world (Wallop 1). Generation X has different work ethics from those of the Baby Boomers. They have a practical and informal approach to work and find the enjoyment of their occupations to be an important issue. For them, it is important to strike the right balance between work and play (Wallop 1). Though they did not grow up with technology, they have come to embrace it as they have witnessed it develop through various stages. Accordingly, they like to work with the latest technology.

Generation Y

Generation Y (Millenials) refers to people who were born between 1980 and 1994. Millenials grew up in a world that was reaping the benefits of the hard work that the Baby Boomers did. Additionally, they had the advantage of being raised by their affluent Baby Boomer and Generation X parents (Wallop 1). This has affected their work ethics significantly. Like the Baby Boomers, the millenials are dedicated towards the work that they do. They are achievement-driven and have high levels of tolerance and confidence. Millenials also like to see the direct impact of their work, a feature that makes them likely to leave various jobs arbitrarily (Wallop 1). Millenials are diverse and have an optimistic outlook towards the world. Additionally, they grew up in a world driven by technology as rapid changes saw them witness the development of the internet, smartphones and computers. This has made them a technology-driven generation as they consider various gadgets important for their work, daily life and even their existence (Wallop 1). The upbringing of the millenials has also made them quite fashionable, as marketers find them to have a penchant for stylish clothing and apparel.

Post-Millenials

Post-Millenials are the generation that is still in its formation stages. Members of this generation were born after 1994, with some still being born today. Many of this generation’s members are still teenagers and are yet to be tried and tested in the workplace (Wallop 1). This is the first truly digital generation, as they grew up surrounded by the internet, smartphones and laptops. Accordingly, technology is important to them and they have already mastered many of the gadgets that exist. The fact that this generation has grown up surrounded by technology means that many of them have a different outlook on the world. They have grown up in an interconnected world, a factor that has made them more diverse than any generation before them (Wallop 1). They are more positive than millenials, perhaps shaped by the tumultuous world in which they grew up, after the conflicts and recessions of the 2000s. This outlook may make them harder workers than the millenials, in a manner similar to that of the Baby Boomers.
