One of the major challenges in the education sector is the behavior of students especially in elementary schools. How the students are managed and corrected according to their wayward ways determines the learning environment and ways in which they change for the positive. This translates to better studies and acquisition of knowledge while the students grow up to be responsible and well-mannered individuals, scaling the heights of education. Challenges brought forward necessitate close working relationship between parents, teachers and administrators in checking of the children’s behaviors. A safe and positive learning environment geared towards full engaging of students in attention and instructional achievements can be achieved in elementary schools.

Paul is an elementary school student who had behavioral issues. He had become withdrawn from paying attention in class and subsequently not following instructions from his teachers. This had affected his overall academic performance and he had several disciplinary issues that were proving bothersome for his parents and himself. In particular, he did not get along well with other classmates and most of the afternoons he could spend time in detention. Various approaches had been put in place to try to correct the ongoing trend, as this was a major concern for all who handled him at all levels and the school’s administration since he was a bright student.

I had the opportunity of taking Paul’s case up and trying to rectify his behavior for a positive outcome. The first instant was to go on a fact-finding process of the classroom environment with which he was associated. Paul was humble from the moment of meeting him and talking to him about the situation. His teachers and fellow students had their opinions about his behavior and conduct while in and out of class. The parents also gave their insight as to the changes in his approach towards all matters relating to schoolwork and association with his teachers. I also physically attended some class sessions in disguise to witness Paul’s behavior and reaction in class.

From the information gathered, I observed that Paul had attitude problems with certain teachers who were always following up on his performance. He did not take this positively and in a way rebelled against them, thereby loosing focus and interest in their teachings. He did not get along well with other students, who in his view were to o close to teachers. He had the opinion that they were supposed to be concerned with their own affairs. His parents talked of his diminishing interest in class work attributing it to his uncomfortable learning environment. I had to strategize a harmonious plan that involved all stakeholders in helping Paul change his behavior.

The first step I did was to talk frankly to Paul on the concerns of all the people involved and his personal interest. I helped create a positive and encouraging environment, which required his participation in collaboration with his parents and teachers. This was to aid in negating the classroom environment being seen as a punishing room or unfriendly scenario. This had immediate effect as Paul loosened up and started giving positive feedback towards the sessions while trying to communicate freely with his parents and teachers. This gradual process required determination and constant input from everyone. Through the foundation set, it was to go on from strength to strength and help create the positive learning environment while changing erratic behaviors required for Paul and other students.
