Critical Thinking Questions

Questions on Meaning

Question 1

The distinctions that Chavez makes between legal and illegal immigrants are contained in the traditional family setup, income levels in the two groups and their education levels and this is important to her. Illegal immigrants have a higher percentage in composition of both parents and children in the setup, have lower income levels and have a higher chance of improving on their education levels as compared to the legal immigrants (Carteret 1).

Question 2

Chavez’s point in paragraphs 5 and 6 is that there is a heightened concern on the adaptation difficulty by the immigrants towards learning English, improving on the academic levels and fear of transformation of the country into the likes of Mexico. This fit into her larger argument by having the positives depicted to counter the negative thoughts and fears based on the immigrants.

Question 3

Chavez reveals her purpose in writing after disclosing the better traditional family setup and improved chances of adaptation into the American way by the immigrants. Chavez did not state her thesis in the introduction to make her point clear and concise after giving the general thoughts and fears of the majority. It is a ploy to unearth the facts behind the assumptions and negative image.

Question on Writing Strategy

Question 1

Chavez characterizes those who hold opposing views as the many observers with the negative perceptions. This characterization suggests that her imagined audience is clearly against the immigrants and their existence in the country. She imagines them to hold no positive outlook or influence of the immigrants to their efforts.

Research Question/Issue

Question 1

The issue question that Linda Chavez tries to answer in her article is that the suspected negativity towards immigrants in America is wrong. This is highlighted by the granting of amnesty when compared to support of the family views (Anderson 15). The issue is based on merits and demerits of accepting the immigrants into the country against the views of the natives.
