Primary Prevention and Health Promotion; The importance of hand Washing

 

Epidemiological Rationale for Topic (statistics related to topic):

The epidemiological rationale for this topic is based on reports that show that hand washing especially with the use of soap or an antiseptic under running water reduces diarrhea by up to 50 %. This is because it kills germs and ensures prevention of spread of infection from one person to another (Tileston, 2007). In addition to this, it has reduced risks of contracting various respiratory related diseases by 16% such as dust pneumonia, asthma attacks and the common cold. Other than hand washing, other initiatives such as the use of hand sanitizers have reduced infection by about 20% (Institute of Medicine (U.S.) 2012).

Nursing Diagnosis:

The Nursing Diagnosis indicates that the risk for infection is attributed to the differences in age in the community and the lack of awareness among certain groups (Tileston, 2007). This is to say that most people infected are children between the age of 4-10 years and old people of above 80 years old due to inability to protect themselves efficiently.

 

Readiness for Learning: Identify the factors that would indicate the readiness to learn for the target aggregate. Include emotional and experiential readiness to learn.

  • Emotional Readiness

If the people involved show up for classes ready to discuss issues and contribute to the lessons it will show that they are emotionally prepared (Tileston, 2007).

If the attendees are attentive, if they listen to the instructor and demonstrate an understanding of the technique taught, it becomes another indication of emotional attentiveness.

  • Experimental Readiness

Once the members of the class are participating in asking questions on hand washing and actually practicing the same to prevent infection after the classes are an example of an experimental success.

 

One of the ways to ensure that this theory is applied is by handing out brochures and other information on combating infection and the correct ways of hand washing. Similarly, the learning theory can incorporate children who may act out scenes and demonstrate the correct ways of hand washing among others to their fellow classmates and age mates. These two ways reaches out to both age groups that is the young and the old and creates a better understanding for both.

The two main goals under the Healthy people 2020 include the prevention, reduction and most importantly the elimination of healthcare associated infections (HAIs), and secondly, there is the promotion of respiratory health through better treatment and early detection (Institute of Medicine (U.S.) 2012). The HP2020 objective therefore supports the teaching because its main aim is the control of the spread of infection especially due to poor hand hygiene (Institute of Medicine (U.S.) 2012). There are studies that show that any efforts towards exercising prevention practices leads to drastic reduction of various HAI diseases. Overall, there are also certain practices that benefit using of the prevention practices such as the reduction of costs and the boosting of financial benefits.

How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives (See page 116 in the textbook)?

The Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives is related to a conference that strongly reaffirms a state of wellbeing, mentally, physically and socially (Tileston, 2007). The attainment of human health is most important in this aspect and thus a worldwide social goal whose realization requires action in a number of areas in the health sector (Tileston, 2007). There is also an existing inequality in health status especially when linked to the developing countries among others that the initiative works towards eradicating. The health People 2020 and Alma have similar goals and all this goals are all about ensuring better outcomes in the health sectors at all times.

Planned Evaluation of Objectives (Outcome Evaluation): Describe what you will measure for each objective and how.

1) I will ask questions to both the children and the adults to see the amount of knowledge they acquired especially on the importance of hand washing.

2) I will watch the as the children perform their plays relating to the need to keep hands clean and the dangers that come from not doing so.

3) I will ensure that one member of each family, as well as, the children can demonstrate how to wash hands and follow the right technique

4) I will evaluate each person on the time taken and the cleanliness at the end of the demonstration

Planned Evaluation of Goal:  Describe how and when you could evaluate the overall effectiveness of your teaching plan.

After the first three classes, I will observe the hand washing technique and notice the differences between the first time and after the classes. Similarly, I will look at the frequency and the consistency in adhering o the taught instructions.

 

Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):

I will create group of people that will evaluate the proposal and formulate all the issues and in the process, I will select a number of adults and children for a secret observation to come up with a clear conclusion.

The potential barriers may be the lack of knowledge, awareness or the willing participation of those involved

Similarly, people may need proof that some of the issues discussed are true and not mere opportunities to take advantage of those involved.

Communication: How will you begin your presentation (hook them in)? How will you end your presentation (go out with a bang)? What nonverbal communication techniques will you employ?

In my presentation, I will start with a relatable story of a person that failed to adhere to the cleaning of the hands, after which, I will look at the health problems that came with making of the decision. I will use a pamphlet presentation to draw more attention and to create a better depiction of the problem.
