An interpretive approach is an individual construction of the overall views provided by individuals with respect to their experiences and appeal to the tow healthcare systems provided. On the other hand a positivist approach provides research results based on the existing knowledge or knowledge gained as a result of positive identification and verification of experiences observed as opposed to introspection and intuition (Schwartz-Shea, & Yanow, 2012). The interpretive approach provides a proactive approach in understanding the views of the participants with respect to the coverage of care provided under the two healthcare plans namely the United States Health Coverage Plan and the Canadian National Health Plan.

The positivist approach emphasizes the need to apply appropriate methods as a means of understanding the objective reality of research. It relies on manipulative and experimental methods as a means of ensuring distances between the objective realities and subjective biases that a researcher may possess. It largely involves approaches such as hypothesis testing and generation as a means of understanding the objective reality of the researcher and avoidance of subjective biases that a researcher may possess (Guthrie, 2010).

A positivist approach would be preferable to an interpretive approach because of the bias associated with a positivists approach. The positivist approach evaluates the objective reality of research by focus on three areas namely validity, reliability and generalization of hypothesis. Thus, the successful evaluation of the Canadian National Health Plan compared to the United States Health Coverage Plan would be achieved using a positivist approach that largely focuses on quantitative techniques as a means of highlighting the favor of one system over the other among participants (Schwartz-Shea, & Yanow, 2012). This research approach validates the objective reality and hypotheses as opposed to the researcher developing an individual view or result on the preference of participants to one health care plan over the other, which is associative with interpretive research.
