Arguments (syllogisms): Truth of propositions and validity of arguments.

What is the difference between the truth of propositions and the validity of arguments?

In this week Discussion, we understand that the truth and validity are two different notions and truth is predicated of propositions whereas validity is predicated of arguments whereas we think propositions are either true or false and it is important to stress that the premises of an argument do not have an actual sound to be true in the order for an argument to be sounding valid if the premises and conclusions are related to each other in the right way then the conclusion would have to sound true and  that a deductive argument claims to provide conclusive proof for its conclusion.

Propositions and arguments are fundamental principles of logic. A proposition refers to a statement that is a bearer of truth or falsity. When a proposition is true, its truth value is true, while a false preposition has a false truth value. An argument refers to statements that consist of premises and a conclusion. A sound and reasonable argument have a true premise and conclusion. Therefore, there is a distinct difference between the validity of an argument and truth of a proposition. 

In logic, the truth of propositions and the validity of arguments differ in terms of their essential properties. Truth is an intrinsic attribute of a statement, whereas the validity of an argument is an inherent attribute of the argument itself. A statement in propositions is made up of premises and a conclusion. For instance, saying that all men are mortal is a premise, while the phrase, “John is mortal” is a conclusion. Consequently, validity as an attribute of an argument comprises of statements with follows conclusion and premises.  However, a previous claim must be true to guarantee true conclusion. 

Another difference is that the truth of propositions is concerned with the laws of truth, while the validity of arguments deals with reasoning. Propositions involve statements that can either be true or false. They make claims about the nature of objects and determine if they are false or true. When a truth value of the statement is true, then the proposition is said to be true, while a false preposition has a false truth value. On the contrary, validity of arguments is determined by premises and the conclusion. Logically, true premises and the conclusion based on these premises in a sentence produce a valid argument. As a result, propositions and arguments are distinguished by their properties and principles.
