Assignment 2
Psychoanalytic therapy refers to a therapeutic process that is often used to create awareness to a patient concerning the outside world. This is done by creating a connection between the inner world and the influence it has or had over the present and the past of the patient. On the other hand, the Person or client-centered technique is applied by placing responsibility on the client so that he or she controls the process with the therapist taking no authoritative role. The two techniques of therapy differ in both technique and procedure, but the results are in most cases successful. This essay will, therefore, evaluate these differences in techniques used to create a better understanding of the two counseling methods.
In the first instance, the therapy process is intended to come up with solutions that explain one’s personality and emotional changes. It has four techniques, among them, free association, transference analysis, dream analysis. and resistance analysis. In free association, the patient’s subconscious is tested such that the therapist requires them to come up with responses to some words. Under the dream analysis, the client talks about all the feelings that may be repressed in dreams and the same applies to the analysis done to the collection of feelings that cause the individual to be resistant to a certain thing or to transfer feelings from one aspect of life to another.
The primary technique in the client-centered approach is that the patient is able to undergo the reflection process such that the therapist uses the client’s narration of an event to create an understanding of why he or she is behaving in certain away. After the clients are done expressing themselves, the therapist uses the empathetic method of consolation where they put themselves in the patient’s shoes and create an understanding and connection that makes the environment safe for sharing. This creates a connection that supports a relationship between the therapist and the client in coming up with suitable solutions to the problems.
Assignment 3
The case study relied on the person or client-centered type of counseling. It first acknowledged that it is an effective method regardless of age, ethnicity or otherwise. This was in relation to child-centered counseling strategies indicating documentation with African Americans, Chinese, Latino and Japanese children (Henderson and Thompson, 2011) Further, the book shows that a certain man named Rodgers comes up with a technique solely suited for children in all ethnic and economic upbringings. The issue with the initiative may be based on the need to satisfy the wants of the patient’s parents as other people claim that the process of self-actualization may not be that effective in children.
The emphasis that people ought to use and rely on their feelings and emotions to express themselves is the first step in confirming that the technique in question is indeed client driven. Then there is the amount of significance given in respect to genuineness and the use of empathy, the focus on personal experiences and personal growth among others (Henderson and Thompson, 2011). Most people that depend on this expect that the process teaches their children how to handle their problems and become worthwhile decision makers. Overall, child counseling presents an opportunity that will consider age and the different stages people are in establishing what it can do.
