Aristotle: A Hypothetical Scenario

According to Aristotle, a set goal is the main motivator of human behavior since achievement of one’s goal makes them happy. Aristotle urges humans to pursue good since good virtues bring about satisfaction that result in happiness. In life, humans usually aim at satisfying certain goals; hence pursue different means, which lead them to the specific result they desire. Aristotle’s theories believe in the notion of the means justifying the end and not the other way round hence advocating for moderation in one’s actions (White, 2011). By doing good in the pursuit of a certain goal, the result will bring about fulfilling happiness.

The hypothetical scenario presented would require a reaction that is well thought and not speedy. A quick reaction would result in an emotional outburst that may lead to sour relations with the former boss. I should be virtuous in my reaction both immediately and after receiving the news. Every virtue I apply should be in moderation to prevent great disappointments or hurting others. For example, when I receive the news on my retrenchment I should not deny the feeling of disappointment or hurt as that is part of my human nature, but I should not let that disappointment dictate my next move. The hurt should not prevent me from searching for other opportunities in the fear of being fired again. This moderation is what maintains sanity. The rationality of my actions should prevent me from acting up or insulting my boss, which would only worsen my situation.

The correct response to the hypothetical scenario presented would be to thank the boss for the opportunity of having been allowed to work for the company in the previous twenty years. I would also appreciate the company management and my co-workers for the cooperation and experience gained during the years I have worked for the company. This would ensure I leave the company in good rapport with everyone. Hence, in the future, if I find myself in a scenario where I have to interact with a former employer or co-worker, he/she would be more willing to help or work with me. The retrenchment should be viewed with a positive attitude, not as a setback, but as an opportunity to pursue other interests that may have been kept on hold due to the busy schedule. It can also offer a chance to use the expertise in my field of work to help the community through community work. This action results in great good and benefit to others and not just myself. By choosing to maintain a positive mentality, it will be easier to regain financial stability, as I will have a motivator. In life, passion to achieve a certain goal is what drives us, and without that passion, people lives become purposeless.

In consequent days, I should ensure that I keep myself busy with constructive work such as hobbies, for example, artwork and plan out my next step to prevent depression. I should engage in activities that involve interaction with positive-minded people who would make me realize a purpose in life apart from employment. I should ensure that my mind does not dwell on the past but works tirelessly until I find a solution to my current predicament, for example, taking the time to apply for another job.. If getting work proves to be difficult, I should dedicate some of my time to community service. This is because the satisfaction brought about by the appreciation by people I help will provide a fulfilling happiness that is different from that of working for money. Based on Aristotle’s theory the correct response is one that would lead to long-term satisfaction. Hence, my responses would seek to bring about greater good and happiness in both the moral and intellectual aspect.
