American History
The 32nd president of the United States Franklin Roosevelt was a prominent leader of his time. He led his people in the world events of mid-20th century and led the United States during the time of great depression and world war. He stood out among his people because he established economic reforms immediately after being elected (Brinkley 79). Measures like Tennessee valley authority, work progress administration and conservation corps strived to bring unemployed men to work on rural projects and earn a paycheck. This was notable because he resolved the question of unemployment during the depths of great depression. Actually, he decreased unemployment from 25% to 2% over his tenure (Brinkley 80).
Roosevelt stood out because of facing the World War II. It dominated his tenure and one remarkable thing was leading the USA into war after the Japanese attacked their pearl harbor. He had prepared his country for war and by the time war came, he had a formidable military presence among the allied forces. The reasons as to why I regard Roosevelt as great is because he restored America confidence and instilled a sense of optimism in the midst of Great depression. He is also the only American president to be elected after two terms of office and for that matter he remain one the popular presidents in American history.
W.E.B Du Bois an activist for civil rights, a historian, a Pan-Africanist, a sociologist, a writer and an editor was prominent because he led to solutions of black people problems in the 20th century. In his long, turbulent career, one thing he fought was racism in the world. He protested against discrimination in employment and education. He was involved with the issues of Asians and Africans in the quest against imperialism and colonialism. Notably, he organized pan African movements that fought for civil rights. Remarkably, he was called ‘The Father of Pan-Africanism’ (Brinkley 106). Du Bois was a great scholar; he contributed as a writer and editor in various magazines. In the platforms, he raised agendas of black Americans and his work bore fruits later on as slavery was abolished. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded with the help of Du Bois (Brinkley 109).
The group was the leading protest organization group during the World War I. Du Bois as its leading figure advocated for anti-lynching legislation, full political representation and full civil rights. The reason as to why I term Du Bois as remarkable is that he attempted virtually to solve every possible problem faced by black Americans of the 20th century. He sought solutions for racism, scholarship positions, national self-determination, integration, third world solidarity, human rights and economic growth. He remains among the greatest activists of human and civil rights.
