Study Abroad

An endless number of people spent their time convincing me how studying abroad was a good idea. They always cited the different benefits including exposure to the Western culture and the chance to study with the most celebrated scholars. Naturally, I agreed with most of their ideas and decided to visit the United States under a scholarship. When I landed in the United States, I had intended to make new American friends, learn their language extensively, and have the best time of my life abroad. Instead, things went sideways very quickly. The apartment I got had noisy roommates who partied all through the week and had little respect for boundaries. This was the worst place to have any private reading or finish an assignment. While it was categorized as English, Americans spoke a kind of slang that comprised of accents, acronyms and truncations that were difficult to follow. Between the strange accents and rapid speech, I hardly got anything so it was safe to say that having a conversation was out of the picture. I thought it better to remain secluded and try to have fun by myself.

After several weeks of studying American in the classroom and observing informal discussions, I finally began grasping the dynamics of their language and even made a few friends in class. I gained enough courage to visit some of the historical sites including the Grand Canyon and the Golden Gate Bridge. American have a different lifestyle altogether. They embody a spirit of liberalism in whatever they are doing, be it work or leisure. As soon as I embraced this culture, I found my studies improving significantly. I had the duty of researching additional material and discussing them with lecturers. Living in America was equally starting to be enjoyable. By cooperating with my roommates, we came up with economical ways of getting meals, paying for rent and other expenses. Students in this country are trusted with a substantial amount of financial responsibility. This was an excellent learning opportunity and a chance for me to grow in life.
